WAMU : The Diane Rehm Show. I was listening to the Diane Rehm Show today during my commute and the topic of discussion was West Nile Virus and the mosquitoes that carry it. One interesting point of discussion during the show was the environmental/ecological benefit of mosquitoes. Can anyone think of any good reasons in having mosquitoes around? Sure, birds feed on the larvae, but birds can eat larvae of other insects. Food for thought.
Posted by johnvu at June 27, 2003 12:09 AMWell, they're also food for bats and fish. I don't know what percentage of their diet, though, so can't speculate on the degree of disruption that would result from the total absence of mosquitoes.
Certainly the viruses and malaria are happy about the existance of mosquitoes!
Posted by: Rana on July 8, 2003 08:01 PMPersonally, I think mosquitoes are good-for-nothing little buggers. No pun intended. Well, maybe it was but who cares? The fact is that they don't help the existence of animal, plant or human life. Only the viruses that kill many people in remote countries. Animals do eat mosquitoes but if they are disease-carrying mosquitoes don't the animals die? Just wondering...
Posted by: Cherr on September 4, 2003 09:23 PMonly pregnant female mosquitoes bite and carry diseases. Non-pregnant females and male mosquitos are very important pollinators.
Posted by: joe on November 12, 2003 06:28 PMTHEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE MALE EATS BACTERIA THEAT ARE VERY DANGEROUSE THE NE ANIMAL IN NATURE.
I have very little patience when it comes to mosquitoes, what useless pieces of shit they are. They spread diseases, they live off the blood of others, and the little pricks use the same dirty needle from victim to victim. Those unsanitary little bastards are as annoying as hell.I wish there was a way to make the little pricks sterile and wipe them off the face of this earth. Some enviromentalists would complain about the creatures that depend on them for a food source. Well to them I say F them, if they can't find another food source then F them also. But that will upset the balance of nature; well if that's the case I would welcome the imbalance of nature if it would result in the demise of those annoying little pricks.
